University at Mid-autumn festival

Peking University, Beijing, Sep. 23th, 2006: A conference, ‘A home from home at
PKU‘, was held in the in the Overseas Exchange Center of Peking University to
celebrate the Mid-autumn festival. Over 150 students from HK, Macau, Taiwan and
mainland have a good time together.
30 students of PKU from HK, Macao and Taiwan were surprised to know that their
parents at home would receive a delicate present, moon cakes, before Mid-autumn
Day.
Zhao Cunsheng, Vice-Director of the school committee of PKU, attended the
conference and encouraged the students present to bring more wisdom, vitality and
creative spirit in the person of the youth.
Xia Wenzhen, President of Taiwan Study Club and a PhD candidate at PKU,
believes that there is not only international and diversiform academic
intercommunication, but also honorable culture at PKU. He said that, in the graduate
education of mainland, the connection between teachers and students is very
important, while the personality of a teacher will influence the students deeply in
many aspects. Teachers always pay much attention to the school work of students
as well as their daily life, which attracts the students from HK, Macao and Taiwan
greatly.
Since universities in mainland enrolled the first student from Taiwan in 1987,
studying in mainland becomes a new current. As the most famous university in
mainland, PKU attracts a group of excellent students from Taiwan, HK and Macao
areas every year. In 2006, PKU enrolled 129 new students from those areas. There
are totally 500 students from those areas now studying at PKU, 60% of which are
post graduate students and PhD candidates.
