PKU Common School Opens

Peking University, Beijing, Sept. 23rd, 2006: The opening ceremony of the Common
School of Peking University was held on campus. The first batch of 53 staff working
at PKU will receive a four-month free training provided by professors and volunteers.
The first phase of training will last four months, with courses offered every weekend.
The curriculum is composed of two aspects: the philosophy of life including lectures
on ―PKU as My Home‖, ―Working Happily‖, ―Learning to Live in Harmony‖, and skills
training including everyday English and basic computer skills. For the course of
Everyday English, the students are divided into ―dolphin class‖ and ―panda class‖,
more acceptable names than ―advanced class‖ and ―adjustment class‖.
Last year, PKU Graduate School of Education and East China Normal University
formed a team to do research on the continuing education of rural migrant workers.
The questionnaire about the educational background of staff at PKU showed that
61% of them have only received education of junior high school before leaving home
for Beijing, mainly because of economic problems. As a result, the idea of
establishing a common school for those people was welcomed and many faculties
and volunteer students at PKU were enrolled as teachers for the staff.
Currently, PKU is the first educational institution nationwide to establish such kind of
common school for the staff working on campus. According to the principal in charge
of this program Ding Xiaohao, PKU Common School will explore the effectiveness of
―university teaching resources plus volunteers‖ training pattern. Once proved to be
successful, this kind of training program can be applied to other universities and
colleges.
