New Institution of Advisers for PKU
International Students

PKU News, Beijing, May 20, 2004: the first introduction and training course on ―the
institution of advisers for PKU international students‖ was given at Zheng Da
international communication center at Peking University. The selected advisers for
international students at Peking University, the core members of SICA (the Students‘
International Communication Association) and the director of International student
office at Peking University are presented.
As Peking University is gaining more reputation from all over the world, more and
more international students come here for further education every year with
admiration for the first-class university in China and deep interests in Chinese
culture. However, to most of the international students who step into this campus for
the first time, they not only have difficulty with their language but also are unfamiliar
with the study facilities, the teaching system, the arrangement of the courses and all
that. In order to help our international students to accustomed themselves to this new
environment more quickly and offer more chances for both international students and
Chinese students to have intercultural communication, a completely new idea---- ―the
institution of advisers for PKU international students‖ was put forward by SICA,
supported and supervised by the International student office. It is intended to unite all
the students with enthusiasm and capability for this special program to participate in
offering guidance and help to the international students at Peking University. We are
ready to try our best to solve the problems our international students have in their
study as well as in their daily life. We also hold the belief that this institution will
benefit both sides.
This new idea echoes well on campus as soon as it was advertised lately. Within a
few days, more than 400 resumes were handed in applying for taking part in this
creative program. After the first round selection, only 120 resumes were remained.
The second round selection was the interview in which the 120 remainders
experienced a strict and challenging test. It was carried out on May 16, 2004 at Lin
Hu Xuan at PKU with the leaders of SICA as the interviewers. The interviewees had
