Peking University, Beijing, Oct. 23rd, 2007: PKU School of Mathematical Sciences
has achieved great success in its undergraduate‘s education since its first recruited
new students in the autumn of 1913. As the ‗Base for Basic Science Research and
Education‘, School of Mathematical Sciences was awarded a national special prize
in the excellent teaching achievements competition in 2001. Another thing worth
mentioning is that out of nearly 8000 graduates of this school since 1952, 32 persons
have been academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) or that the
Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), which is definite a great honor.
Several factors should be attributed to these accomplishments. First of all, there is a
long tradition in this school that academicians themselves would teach
undergraduates. Almost all the prominent professors such as Jiang Zehan, Duan
Xuefu, Cheng Mingde and Ding Shisun taught students in person. Their lectures are
very popular among students.
Secondly, School of Mathematical Sciences carries out two specially designed ‗3+5‘
and ‗4+4‘ scheme for college students, which are put into effect in 1997 and 2003
respectively. These schemes put more emphasis on basic training in the first 3 or 4
semesters, laying a solid foundation for their later major choosing as well as their
career building.
In order to upgrade students‘ academic ability, School of Mathematical Sciences
provides a variety of scientific activities from the discussion class for the lower
grades students, to the diverse research funds supporting both theory and
application studies, and graduation thesis as well. Besides, it is a significant way to
broaden their minds of academic research by engaging in international study and
communication activities. No wonder students from School of Mathematical
Sciences stand out for their extraordinary performances in extracurricular scientific
research activities.
