Lin Yifu and Wang Yifu Jointly

Peking University, March 10th, 2004: Lin Yifu, the director of CCER (China Center
for Economic Research) and Wang Yifu, the vice governor of Fujian Province jointly
gave a wonderful lecture on Taiwan issue and the situation across the Taiwan Strait
on the evening of March 10th.
As a renowned economist, Professor Lin Yifu stated that the main reasons for the
rapid development of Taiwan economy from 1950s to 1990s from the perspective of
comparative advantage. In his opinion, the prosperity of Taiwan economy really due
to the realization of the upgrade and the transform of industry structure, instead of
the explanations of the theory of neo-Confucianism and the theory of international
relations. However, the relation between Taiwan economy and mainland economy
has been partitioned artificially since 1996 and economy stagnancy appeared in
Taiwan. He claimed that the best way to develop future Taiwan economy was to
make the combination of the advantages of capital and technology in Taiwan and the
advantages of labor and resources in mainland.
Then Lin Yifu introduced Wang Yifu, who has the same first name with him to the
audience. Wang is not only the vice governor of Fujian (the nearest mainland
province to Taiwan), but also a researcher of Taiwan culture. He analyzed the culture
of Taiwan from the perspective of the relation between Fujian and Taiwan. He looked
back on the educational relation between Fujian and Taiwan and stated that the root
of the culture and folk-custom is in mainland.
The two Mr. Yifu also answered the various questions from the audience.
