PKU News, Beijing, Mar 10th, 2004: Ding Gang, senior journalist in the international
department of People‘s daily, came to lecture at School of Journalism and
Communication, Peking University this afternoon. Centering on his career
experience abroad, he expressed his views on being a qualified international news
reporter.
In addition to fluent foreign language and a good knowledge of the foreign country,
always being full of curiosity is a key factor for an international news reporter, said
Mr. Ding. A qualified journalist has to be Jack of all trades, and to achieve this, a
journalist must develop the habit of accumulating a wide range of knowledge in daily
work. Also, thinking diligently can enable journalists to report from better
perspectives. To make his words more persuasive and vivid, he took his famous
reports on the 9.11 case and the hotly-discussed medical case of transplanting
heads for example. He added that a journalist is not an instructor and should stand in
the readers‘ shoes to write news.
The present students were interested in his experience abroad and asked many
correlated questions. When asked whether a journalist‘s reports will be influenced
the foreign country‘s culture and ideology during his staying abroad, Ding admitted
that it is to some degree, true but also emphasized the importance to put his native
country‘s benefits on the considerable position. He mentioned the imbalance culture
exchange between our country and other countries that he noted in his staying
abroad.
Ding worked as a resident correspondent in Belgium, Sweden and the United
Nations successively after graduation from the department of journalism in Social
Academy. He had successfully reported many international issues and won the first
place in dispatches of the fourth China International News Award.
