PKU-Yale Lecture Series VIII: Science
of Information Networks

Peking University, Beijing, Oct 15th, 2007: Edmund Yeh, Associate Professor of
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of Yale University, lectures on the
science of information network in the second boardroom of Overseas Exchange
Center.
Tens of students from different faculties, mainly School of Electronics Engineering
and Computer Science, attend this lecture which is presided over by Prof. Jiao Bingli
of department of electronics. Together with other relative teachers, Yu Ningping,
Dean of the program office of Yale at PKU, also presents as the delegate of Yale
University.
Prof. Edmund Yeh introduces to his audiences the origination of the science of
information, explains how it works and discusses the profound impact that it will
likely have on human development in the years ahead, based on the academic
achievement of American mathematician Claude Shannon, the founder of modern
information science. He introduces many instances of figures and examples from our
daily life to make this discipline more sensible to the audience.
Pref. Yeh also makes an introduction of Rong Hong‘s study experiences in America,
who was the first foreign student from China in Yale University, and the extraordinary
contribution he made to the education of China in 19th century, as well as to the
culture communication between America and China.
When talking about ‗harmony‘, Prof. Yeh refers to two aspects, one is the harmony of
China and the west countries in the area of ideology and culture, the other is the
harmony of natural sciences and humanities. In the meantime, he points out that it is
the most meaningful to have long-term investment in education and science and
technology, so he encourages the young students by saying ‘I hope you can make
long-term investment in your real cherished things‘.
The professor‘s clear guided lecture does capture everybody‘s attention. After the
speech, he patiently answers all kinds of questions from the participants.
