President Xu Zhihong: Ensuring the
Purity of Science Research is the Social
Responsibility of University Presidents

―University president should establish a series of institutions to ensure the purity of
science research. It‘s the social responsibility which they shouldn‘t shirk off,‖ said Xu
Zhihong, PKU president and SAC academician, at Chongqing University of Post and
Telecommunication.
President Xu gave a lecture entitled ―Social Responsibility of Scientists and Ethics in
Science Research‖, in which he listed several kinds of unethical problems in science
research, such as flippancy style of study, plagiarism, artificial diploma, artificial
achievements and so on. In his opinion morality and institution are two main reasons.
It‘s abnormal to judge a scholar by the quantity of published articles, instead of
quality; by the level of the periodicals where the article is published, not the article
itself.
President Xu said, university president should help to establish a scientific evaluating
system which can create a good study condition and a good situation to make great
achievements for the faculty. It‘s a great challenge. ―President shouldn‘t shield the
shortcomings of his faculty, or he will destroy the whole teaching faculty.‖
―To be a great researcher, firstly be an honest person.‖ President Xu quoted Prof.
Wang Xuan, the inventor of Chinese Laser Phototypography System and the founder
of Founder Group, to finish his lecture.
