First Eco-civilization Research Center
in China Founded at PKU

Peking University, Beijing, Dec. 3rd, 2007: On Nov. 29th, the first eco-civilization
research center in China was officially founded. Prof. Pan Wenshi presided the
ceremony, attended by Prof. Xu Zhihong(President of Peking University), Prof. Chen
Jia'er (former President of Peking University), Yang Jiping (an official from the State
Forestry Administration), Prof. Chen Shoupeng and Prof. E Yunlong (both from
China Promotion of Education of Ecological Ethics Association).
This research center, whose foundation was approved on Oct. 18th, became the first
high-level research institute focusing on eco-civilization. The research center also
has a glittering member list: Prof. Chen, Prof. Pan as the director, Prof. E as the vice
director and Prof. Xu, Prof. Chen (they are both Academicians) as the directors of
Academic Committee.
The Academic Committee consists of leading scholars from several related
departments of Peking University. Besides, experts from other institutes will be
invited. The current project, in the charge of Prof. Pan, is a research on the
relationship of development and protection of Chongzuo and Qinzhou from Guangxi
Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The concept of eco-civilization was first put forward and emphasized as a new
requirement to realize the goal of building a well-off society in an all-round way in the
report of CPC 17th National Congress, Prof. Xu said. The Eco-civilization Research
Center of Peking University will direct its researches towards the concept of
ecological harmony, such as developing and protecting the harmony between
mankind and nature. It will also further its study on the theories of eco-civilization.
Official Yang made a speech titled "Natural Resources Is the Basis of Development".
He stated that the foundation of the research center fully represented the visions of
strategy, responsibility and the spirit of rigorous study of the teachers and students at
Peking University. The State Forestry Administration will join hands with association
for the promotion of developing eco-civilization to push forward eco-civilization.
