disasters, our affiliated hospitals have sent medical teams to the disaster areas, and
the remained teachers and students have devoted into the related scientific projects
to support the disaster areas which has shown PKU‘ s responsibility and patriotic
spirit again.
In 2008, after ten-year accumulation, ―985project‖ has pushed the constructions of
PKU into a new step. It is glad to see that PKU has won many rewards and
recognition as a comprehensive research university. Such as the Ministry of
Education College Science and Technology Award, the Awardee of Science and
Technology Achievement Award by Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, the philosophy
and social sciences major research project of Ministry of Education, Beijing
Philosophy and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award, National Teacher,
and National Excellent Course. We have also made progress in the development of
management services and teaching strength. For example, we have completed the
reception missions of thirteen leaders from different countries; we have hosted the
fifth Beijing Forum successfully; we have raised 358 million yuan for the construction
of the university; we have also improved the research and study environment by
introducing a series of newly building or rebuilding projects in our school. Thus, I will
not cite more numbers and examples because the development of PKU is obvious
especially for the teachers, students and school staffs who have taken parts in it.
Every one of us has embedded wisdom and diligence in the achievements of PKU.
Just because of the spirit of building up a world-level university under our unity, PKU
has continuously developed with a high speed.
Here, I also want to share a piece of good news with everyone. The 2008 Supreme
State Science and Technology Award will be presented a few days later. Prof. Xu
Guangxie, Dean of College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering of PKU, and
Prof. Wang Zhongcheng of Beijing Tiantan Hospital, PKU alumni are both the
candidates of this award, and both of them are PKU people. Therefore, I remember
Prof. Wang Xuan, Prof. Wu Wenjun, Prof. Huang Kun, Prof. Ye Duzheng, and Prof.
Liu Dongsheng, who won the Supreme State Science and Technology Award
previously. They are the outstanding representatives of PKU. Through them, we can
truly understand the spirit, the tradition, the responsibility, and the mission of PKU
and also feel the perfect combination of the nation needs and their own scientific
innovation. So I propose, let us applaud to Prof. Xu Guangxian and Prof. Wang
Zhongcheng for their wonderful achievements.
PKU people, which is a name contained responsibility, dedication, trust, and hope.
The history ups and downs have reminded us the developing direction of China and
the historical mission of PKU people. In 2009, we will celebrate the 90th anniversary
of the May 4th Movement and the 60th anniversary of People‘s Republic of China
(PRC). In these glorious moments of solemn commemoration and celebration, I hope
every young student of PKU can review the PKU history following the development
of our country and gain knowledge and spirit power from the outstanding PKU
