PKU news, Beijing, May 9, 2004: the 11th China Youth TV Singing contest
(unprofessional team competition) is bringing down its curtain at the end of this
year‘s May Day holiday.
In this great event, one of the spotlight belonged to the entrants from Peking
University. In the initial heat and semi-finals of this singing contest, Peking University
delegation won in the very first battle and got the qualification for the finals. Among
the 74 delegations that entered the semi-finals nationwide, ten are from the colleges
and universities. There are only 25 delegations entered the finals, and PKU
delegation achieved 17th place.
PKU delegation has a strong lineup, with contestants from the core members of PKU
Student Choir and Professor Hou Xijin, the director of the Student Choir as its
academic advisor. Among the 12 entrants, there are four solo contestants and two
singing groups.
As for the six programs of Peking University delegation, the most splendid
performance belongs to the six-student group. Most people still remember that in the
seventh round of the contest, the six youthful boys sang and danced in the stage,
unfolded their shining style and features as colleges before the eyes of the judges
and audiences. With the student composer Zhang Ran from PKU as the
accompanist, their excellent cooperation got them a very high score, ninety-eight
point forty-four, for their own creation ―Crazy Bicycle‖. The performance, which
incorporated folk and jazz, was a dramatic departure from the ordinary. Some judges
set high values on the performance of the six-student group, deeply impressed by
their new and original style of singing and their efforts in putting campus culture into
the creation of the song.
While all the students of Peking University are excited at the great performance of
our student group, few students really know what great efforts they have made
