Prof. Li Yining
Peking University, Beijing, Dec. 3rd, 2005: Students and teachers of the Peking
University held celebrations for Prof. Li Yining on his 75th birthday and 50th
anniversary of teaching career in the Guang Hua School of Management.
The celebrations fall into three parts. On the morning of Dec 3rd, Prof. Li held a
lecture on the comparative study of industrialization. Wu Zhipan, executive vice
secretary of PKU and dean of the Guang Hua School of Management presided at the
lecture, expressing his wishes for Prof. Li on behalf of all the PKU students and
teachers. PKU President Xu Zhihong, then in Shenzhen, also sent his congratulatory
letter to Prof. Li.
In his lecture, Prof. Li elaborated on some key issues about industrialization by
relating the world economic history with China‘s industrial development.
On the afternoon of Dec. 3rd, a symposium on celebrating Prof. Li‘s 75th birthday
and 50th anniversary of teaching career was held in the Guang Hua School of
Management. PKU Vice President Zhang Guoyou presided and many celebrities
attended the symposium, extending their admiration to Prof. Li.
Zhu Shanli, vice dean of the Guang Hua School of Management, traced Prof. Li‘s 50
year-long teaching career, which was divided into four stages, viz. 1930-1978, the
first stage, when he worked in the information office of the Economics Department
after graduation; 1979-1985, the second stage, when he proposed the ownership
and stock reform theory and put an end to the Socialist Political Economy;
1986-1999, the third stage, when he continued his exploration on the challenged
theory of ownership and stock reform; from 2000 on, the fourth stage, when he wrote
the Origins of Capitalism and the History of Rome- Byzantine Economy.
At the end of the symposium Prof. Li made a speech, reading his newly created
poems to the guests and winning warm applauses.
In the evening Prof. Li‘s students treated Mr. and Mrs. Li and the guests to a
banquet.
