北京大学英语新闻网/Peking University News
At 7:18 in the morning, we took the train No. 7115 at Feitai Station in south Beijing
and headed for our destination Shacheng city in Hebei province. On our way, the sky
turned from winter dawn‘s deep dark into light blue and sun-shining. As this train
does not go along the Jingzhang line, we had a smooth and high-speed trip. The
scene on both side of the train gradually took off the urban flavor and took on the
rural, natural breath. After 3 hours, we arrived at the Shacheng Station which is a big
relay passenger station at the beginning of Jingzhang Line.
We had a short visit to the city and at 13:48 the No. 7174 train we got on set off. This
time we were just on the historic railway line. Due to its long history, the rails of
Jingzhang Line are very old and when riding on the rails, the train seemed a little
more bumping compared with the previous new line. There are fewer trains, whether
passenger train or freight train, going on this line nowadays. We can experience its
bleakness from the scruffy stations and the aged crossties. We passed villages after
villages and tried to read the customs there. At Qinglong Gorge Station, the train
stopped for a relatively long period of time and train attendant told us it was 7
minutes. We got off the train and visited the statue of Zhan Tianyou beside the
platform with reverence. This statue is now one of the tourist attractions in this
mountainous small station. At 6:00, after 4 hours of train travel, we were back on the
platform of Qinghuayuan Station.
More than a hundred years ago, Jingzhang Railway Line not only boasted its ―first‖
status in China, but also showed the determination of the Chinese people to get
independent and develop with their own power. With the elapse of time, perhaps
those small stations in the mountain may be forgot by people, perhaps the once busy
rails may receive fewer and fewer trains and passengers, perhaps the resplendency
of the once glorious railway line may get faded out, but as long as the spirit of
hardworking and the determination to be independent branded in the marrow of
China Railway and the Chinese people are sure to be as everlasting as the Great
Wall along the rails.
