Peking University, Beijing, Oct. 21st, 2008: The International Symposium for the 15th
Anniversary of the China Center for Edgar Snow Studies (CCESS) and the 70th
Anniversary for the publication of ―Red Star over China‖ was held in Yingjie
Exchange Center at Peking University on October 17th.
Xu Zhihong, President of PKU, Ling Qing, Honorary President of China Society for
People‘s Friendship Studies (PFS), Jin Yongjian, President of the PFS, Bill Skaggs,
Deputy Mayor of Kansas City in United States, Gary Pettett, President of Edgar
Snow Memorial Foundation, Wang Xuezhen, Deputy Director of PKU Council and
more than 40 scholars from China and America attended the seminar, which was
hosted by Li Yansong, Assistant President of PKU and Director of CCESS.
Mr. Xu Junqi and Miss Ye Tiehua donated 500,000 yuan as research fund to CCESS
and accepted to be directors of the center. Miss Ye said that this was a great honor
for her and her husband, and thus they will exert their utmost efforts to make greater
contributions to academic research.
After the seminar, President Xu Zhihong said that "contemporary Snow spirit" could
be interpreted as "building a Sino-US friendship and expanding exchanges between
China and the United States". He hoped that China would be more open, exchanges
between colleges and universities of China and the United States would be more
often, the cooperation between two countries would be tighter so as to co-build a
harmonious world.
As introduced by Li Yansong, Director of CCESS, the center would invite the
University of Missouri and the Edgar Snow Memorial Foundation to establish a lab of
Edgar Snow and a library at PKU for young people to understand Snow and his
immortal spirit.
