Popularity <strong>of</strong> NGO at <strong>PKU</strong><br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, Apr. 6th (2006): NGO, or Non-Government Organization,<br />

first introduced into <strong>PKU</strong>, by EADA(East Asian Development Association, a student<br />

association <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong>), is now gaining popularity at <strong>PKU</strong> under the effort <strong>of</strong> SIFE <strong>PKU</strong><br />

(Students In Free Enterprise at <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>).<br />

SIFE <strong>PKU</strong>, organized by the EADA in Dec. 5th, 2005, is a team <strong>of</strong> excellent students<br />

from different departments and schools <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong> aiming to spread the spirit <strong>of</strong> NGO in<br />

China under the SIFE vision to help people achieve their dreams through Free<br />

Enterprise education. SIFE <strong>PKU</strong>‘s efficient and active roles in the spread <strong>of</strong> NGO<br />

and SIFE spirit, as well as their beneficial activities, have initiated a popularity <strong>of</strong><br />

NGO at <strong>PKU</strong>. SIFE‘s NGO Program is mainly made up <strong>of</strong> two parts: Undergraduate<br />

Student Internship Program and NGO Internship Program. Undergraduate Student<br />

Internship Program endeavors to persuade the companies to <strong>of</strong>fer internship for <strong>PKU</strong><br />

students who will then donate part <strong>of</strong> their salaries to finance the senior high school<br />

students in the Gui Zhou province. The NGO Internship Program recruits volunteer<br />

students to get to know, work and assist the NGOs. The program also tries to provide<br />

a platform for the NGOs to communicate and share their resources with each other.<br />

The coming China NGO Development Forum, to be held on Apr. 16, 2006, will mark<br />

a climax <strong>of</strong> the popularity <strong>of</strong> NGO not only at <strong>PKU</strong>, but also across China. Influential<br />

NGOs, including Grass-roots Organization Learning Network, Oxfam Group etc.,<br />

scholars studying NGOs, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Deng Guosheng, from the NGO Research Center <strong>of</strong><br />

Tsinghua <strong>University</strong>, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Wang Ying, from the Center for Women‘s Law &Legal<br />

Services <strong>of</strong> <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> as well as many sponsoring companies, such as the<br />

Wal-Mart, Pepsi, L‘Oreal etc. will attend the forum to discuss the development <strong>of</strong><br />

NGO in China.<br />
