Peking University, Beijing, Nov. 18th, 2005: At the invitation of Chinese University of
Hong Kong, Lu Jianming, professor from the Department of Chinese Language and
Literature of PKU, gave a lecture on the problem and solution of Chinese teaching at
the SHB Hall on the afternoon of 11th November, attracting teachers and students
from five high schools as well as CUHK.
After pointing out the decline of Chinese level in students and even part of teachers
in recent years, Professor Lu stated the problem of Chinese teaching. He said: ―We
have emphasized too much on its characters as a branch of humanities and ignored
its properties as an instrument. Meanwhile, through the years, Chinese teaching is
still exam-oriented.‖
To put forward a solution to these problems, Lu summarized the purpose of Chinese
teaching. According to him, the goal of Chinese teaching is to equip students with
all-around ability of Chinese, to have them obtain higher literary quality and form
healthy cultural taste. He also mentioned that whatever kind of Chinese teaching
should not lack in the cultivation of language sense.
At last, Professor Lu discussed the reform of Chinese teaching. In his opinion,
reading and imitative writing should be the emphasis of high school education; and
what is taught should be something unavailable for self-learning. Finally, he
encouraged Chinese teachers in Hong Kong to make use of HK‘s advantages and
set a good example for their counterparts in mainland.
