background the undergraduates and more profound and professional courses and
researches for the graduates. Therefore, the recommendation program further
stabilizes the accumulation of knowledge for the would-be-graduates.
The recommendation rate at PKU was higher than that of other universities this year
(1569/2749), however, it was not a piece of cake to gain the admission among so
many outstanding peers. In spite of the favorable situations and satisfactory quotas
for the recommendation program provided by PKU, the national graduate program
has prescribed the total number, so that the students can only gain the access to
graduate through harsh competition. Furthermore, the number of applicants keeps
increasing, and the PKUers have to compete with other students on the same
starting point. And PKU only offers one certification for one applicant in order that no
quotas will be wasted.
GPA or Integration
How to be a recommended graduate? This is a hottest question.
A good GPA is the basic qualification for the applicants. The Graduate Institute
recommended that the applicants‘ GPA should be in the upper 50%. On the other
hand, GPA is not the only criteria. The research experience, the dissertations, social
service and especially the interview performance contribute a lot to the result. GPA
only account for one aspect of a student‘s study and ability, while the exam and
interview in the recommendation process pay much attention to the academic
potential of the applicants.
To Be or not to Be
Every year there were a few students who did not go to other universities or institutes
on the recommendation because of their PKU complex. It is true that PKU has the
leading position in advanced education, but it is also beneficial if one receives
different opinions and experience different academic styles after four years at PKU. If
we pursue the higher education in other places and combine the different essences,
we are sure it will benefit a lot for the students for further development.
Responsibilities
The recommendation for the undergraduates gives them a good starting point for
further study. But the first task they should accomplish is to finish their
undergraduate courses successfully and, if they have spare time, they could have a
glimpse of the graduate study program waiting for them. If they fail in one course in
the last year, their admission will be dismissed.
Every PKUer is always a member of PKU wherever he goes. It is our responsibility to
care for her reputation in society and to win more honors for her.
