guidance is to employ excellent professors from various departments as the tutors
for the Yuanpei students; in new system of class and dormitory management, they
have learned from the undergraduate management model of Oxford, Cambridge,
Harvard and Yale, etc. and put the students of different majors together, which has
greatly facilitate their communication and help to broaden their view.
80% of Yuanpei students believe that it is better for them to choose their majors after
a period of campus life, during which they could know better of their inclinations and
majors. In their junior years, the students go to 22 departments rather than crowd
into several hot majors.
Effect
―Interest is the best teacher.‖ Yuanpei Pilot Program has a great respect to the
interest of the students. Though the liberal education has shortened the time for
major study, the students‘ professional capability is not abased. The extra basic
courses have laid a solid ground for more professional and profound study. Su Jie,
who was recommended to the Chemistry Department, won the first in the
Recommendation Exam. She said, ―The basic courses, such as biology and physics
I had in the first two years help me a lot in chemistry study and research.‖
Through liberal education, the Yuanpei students‘ comprehensive skills have been
greatly promoted and the creative potential is seen in many a student. Wu Hao, who
later majored in history, got 95 in his final dissertation. In class discussion, his unique
response to Yan Buke, the famous scholar in history, was highly appraised, and Prof.
Yan in his discourse expressed his thanks to him.
The Yuanpei students have an apparent advantage in competition of the three funds
for undergraduate creativity. 8 fund programs in 2001 have so far been finished and
excellent academic dissertations have been produced, among which three were
awarded. In 2005 ―Challenge Cup‖, two programs from Yuanpei got the top (first and
second) in liberal arts.
Among the 2005 graduates, 18 went to famous universities in the world, such as
Harvard, California Science and Technology Institute, Columbia, etc., 29 were
recommended to domestic universities, while those who chose to work were warmly
welcomed by PKU Founder, HP, Unilever, South News-papering, etc.
The cultivation of youths is an endless process. The five-year accomplishment of
Yuanpei maybe not enough to prove the total success of China‘s education
reformation, but the idea of Yuanpei has been deeply rooted in our heart.
