Peking University, Beijing, March 3rd: Mr. Qu Changying, 2003 ―China‘s Top Ten
Journalists of the Hour‖, gave a speech on TV news interview and supervision of
mass media at PKU this afternoon. Students were deeply attracted by his rich and
exciting journalist experiences in the program ―Focus‖ (Jiao Dian Fang Tan) of
CCTV.
Mr. Qu mainly introduced his experiences in ―Focus‖ to students. He used two
examples. The first was how they made the program about the illegal act of
―Yuanhua‖ Group in Fuzhou of Fujian province. From this example, students could
know what a journalist could do when the people related to the event refused
accepting interview. The second example was how he successfully discovered the
truth of the coal mine calamity happened in Linfen, Shanxi province in 2003. Mr. Qu
emphasized that a qualified journalist should equip himself with ability to discover
problems through minor clues. Because of the skeptical spirit and the consistency to
explore truth he showed in this report, he was titled 2003 ―China‘s Top ten
Journalists of the Hour‖.
Students were quite interested in Mr. Qu‘s speech and deeply moved by his
courageous and professional attitudes towards media‘s monitoring power. When
being asked the biggest pleasure in TV news interview, he said, ―the feeling of
success lies in the process of exploring truth‖.
Mr. Qu also contributed his success to the flexible personnel system of ―Focus‖, a TV
news commentary program famous for its investigating news report since 1994. With
almost 300,000,000 audiences every night, ―Focus‖ has three journalist teams, two
of which are responsible for daily news report that function as monitoring power and
the other is in charge of sudden events. ―Focus‖ sets various prizes for the teams
every quarter, thus they can gain improvements through competing with each other.
He highly commended this competitive system that satisfies audiences on one hand,
and on the other hand, provides an impartial environment for journalists with free rein
