value chain <strong>of</strong> ―Smile Value‖. They think that Chinese enterprises can only do basic<br />

jobs as Indian companies, the pattern <strong>of</strong> international labor division in s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

industry cannot be changed, and Chinese enterprises can never succeed under<br />

monopoly <strong>of</strong> multinational s<strong>of</strong>tware companies… Thus they do nothing while<br />

multinational enterprises are expanding in China‘s s<strong>of</strong>tware market but receiving<br />

orders from foreign companies and dealing with simple operations with low added<br />

value.<br />

Under such circumstances, enterprises should first <strong>of</strong> all make their own guidelines.<br />

Otherwise they can never truly make innovations.<br />

A Pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> Ni Guangnan:<br />

Ni Guangnan, academician <strong>of</strong> CAE, researcher <strong>of</strong> Computer Science <strong>of</strong> Chinese<br />

Academy <strong>of</strong> Science, expert in computer science, top engineer <strong>of</strong> Lenovo Group. He<br />

is one <strong>of</strong> the first scholars in China who conducted research on information process<br />

<strong>of</strong> Chinese characters and model recognition and brought forth the idea <strong>of</strong><br />

association in Chinese characters typing. The association character system that he<br />

was in charge provided a good solution to a series <strong>of</strong> technical problems in<br />

processing <strong>of</strong> characters and won the First Price <strong>of</strong> National Scientific and<br />

Technologic Progress Awards in 1988. Since then the computer enterprise changed<br />

its name to Lenovo Group. After that he took charge <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> Lenovo<br />

mini-size computers and won the First Price <strong>of</strong> National Scientific and Technologic<br />

Progress Awards again in 1992. In following years Lenovo mini-size computers<br />

became the core operation <strong>of</strong> Lenovo Group. In recent years, Ni has been devoting<br />

himself to promoting Linux operation system in China and developing products with<br />

their own core technology such as internet computers based on CPU made in China<br />

and Linux operation system.<br />

How can enterprises make innovations? How significant is innovation for the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> enterprises? These questions seem to be very familiar to us, yet they<br />

have been haunting Chinese enterprises for a long time and exerting great influence<br />

on Chinese enterprises‘ expansion to the world. With these questions in mind,<br />

Science Times conducted an interview with Ni Guangnan, renowned expert in<br />

computer science and academician <strong>of</strong> CAE. Ni Guangnan has ample experiences in<br />

enterprises‘ technical innovation and has unique ideas on innovation in enterprises.<br />
