Peking University, Beijing, Sept. 25th, 2008: The 9th Stanford PKU-based branch
program was launched at 10 a.m. on Sept. 22nd at Linhuxuan.
Mr. Li Yansong, Principal of PKU Office of International Relations and assistant to
the university president attended the opening ceremony. He expressed the sincere
regards on behalf of Professor Min Weifang, Director of PKU Administration
Commission. Ever since Stanford University opened its first Asian branch at Peking
University in the autumn of 2004, he said, the program has been performing as an
important platform for cooperation. More than 50 professors from both universities
have held classes and the number of students who have benefited from joint classes
as well as the language partner program have exceeded 500.
Dr. Shen Xiaohong, Director of Stanford University Beijing office, appreciated the
considerate arrangements of PKU. The just-held Olympic Games presented us an
ever beautiful China, she said. She also encouraged students to make full use of this
precious opportunity at PKU to learn more about Chinese people, China's economic
development as well as its social progress.
Prof. Li Xiaoqi, dean of PKU International College for Chinese language Studies
showed her appreciations to the program and said that PKU International College for
Chinese language Studies has a high regard to the program and has provided it with
experienced faculty.
Andrew Walder, professor of Department of Sociology in Stanford University gave a
speech and shared his personal experience of teaching in the Stanford PKU-based
branch program two years ago. He has been doing research about China since the
1970s. His wife, Prof. Jean OI from Department of Political Sciences of Stanford
University also participated in the program this time.
Student representatives from PKU and Stanford University expressed their gratitude
for this opportunity and their wishes to make continuous progress during the
program.
