Program Starts<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, Sept. 25th, 2008: The 9th Stanford <strong>PKU</strong>-based branch<br />

program was launched at 10 a.m. on Sept. 22nd at Linhuxuan.<br />

Mr. Li Yansong, Principal <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> International Relations and assistant to<br />

the university president attended the opening ceremony. He expressed the sincere<br />

regards on behalf <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Min Weifang, Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong> Administration<br />

Commission. Ever since Stanford <strong>University</strong> opened its first Asian branch at <strong>Peking</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> in the autumn <strong>of</strong> 2004, he said, the program has been performing as an<br />

important platform for cooperation. More than 50 pr<strong>of</strong>essors from both universities<br />

have held classes and the number <strong>of</strong> students who have benefited from joint classes<br />

as well as the language partner program have exceeded 500.<br />

Dr. Shen Xiaohong, Director <strong>of</strong> Stanford <strong>University</strong> Beijing <strong>of</strong>fice, appreciated the<br />

considerate arrangements <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong>. The just-held Olympic Games presented us an<br />

ever beautiful China, she said. She also encouraged students to make full use <strong>of</strong> this<br />

precious opportunity at <strong>PKU</strong> to learn more about Chinese people, China's economic<br />

development as well as its social progress.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Li Xiaoqi, dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong> International College for Chinese language Studies<br />

showed her appreciations to the program and said that <strong>PKU</strong> International College for<br />

Chinese language Studies has a high regard to the program and has provided it with<br />

experienced faculty.<br />

Andrew Walder, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Sociology in Stanford <strong>University</strong> gave a<br />

speech and shared his personal experience <strong>of</strong> teaching in the Stanford <strong>PKU</strong>-based<br />

branch program two years ago. He has been doing research about China since the<br />

1970s. His wife, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Jean OI from Department <strong>of</strong> Political Sciences <strong>of</strong> Stanford<br />

<strong>University</strong> also participated in the program this time.<br />

Student representatives from <strong>PKU</strong> and Stanford <strong>University</strong> expressed their gratitude<br />

for this opportunity and their wishes to make continuous progress during the<br />

program.<br />
