the Demographic Window and Healthy<br />

Aging<br />

<strong>PKU</strong> <strong>News</strong>, Beijing, May,10th, 2004: International conference on the Demographic<br />

Window and Healthy Aging, scheduled on the 10th to 11th <strong>of</strong> this May, is organized<br />

by the International Union for the Scientific Study <strong>of</strong> Population, Asian Population &<br />

Sustainable Development Analysis Center and Center for Healthy Aging and Family<br />

Studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong>.<br />

Many special guests have been invited to the conference including Jiang Zhenghua,<br />

Vice Chairperson <strong>of</strong> the Standing Committee <strong>of</strong> the National People‘s Congress,<br />

Jacque Vallin, chairman <strong>of</strong> the International Union for the Scientific Study <strong>of</strong><br />

Population, Chinese famous economist Lin Yifu, expert <strong>of</strong> Chinese characteristics<br />

Hu Angang and many experts from both domestic and overseas.<br />

Since 1970s, China has experienced the transition from high birth rate and high<br />

death rate to low birth rate and low death rate, as the result <strong>of</strong> the economic<br />

development <strong>of</strong> the society. Such a transition causes changes in the age structure<br />

and the society is considered as an aging society. Aging in developed countries is a<br />

concomitant <strong>of</strong> urbanization and industrialization and therefore is assumes an<br />

incremental process. However, in China, the demographic transition was late yet<br />

fast; the impact <strong>of</strong> population aging is a problem we can‘t ignore.<br />

However, according to some demographic economists, the aging transition provides<br />

a transitory opportunity which is called ‖the demographic dividend‖. In such a period<br />

<strong>of</strong> time, the proportion <strong>of</strong> child-raising is declining while the proportion <strong>of</strong> the labor<br />

force is increasing. Meanwhile, the proportion <strong>of</strong> the aged people has not reached<br />

the high level. The rapid economic progress <strong>of</strong> Japan and Asia Four Dragon mainly<br />

depended on ‖the demographic dividend‖.<br />

Almost 50 experts from Europe, America and Asia gathered in CCER to<br />
