Enterpriser Meng Weimin Conferred<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, Oct. 26th, 2006: On the afternoon <strong>of</strong> October 20th, the<br />

ceremony <strong>of</strong> Conferring Honorary Distinction <strong>of</strong> President <strong>of</strong> <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> was<br />

held in the north auditorium <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong> library, where Hong Kong enterpriser Meng<br />

Weimin received the Distinction <strong>of</strong> Honorary President <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong>.<br />

<strong>PKU</strong> President Xu Zhihong gave a speech, praising Mr. Meng for his outstanding<br />

contributions to the mainland in the fields <strong>of</strong> education and medical & health<br />

services. President Xu also thanked Mr. Meng for his support to <strong>PKU</strong>.<br />

Min Weifang, Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Party Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong>, conferred the Honorary<br />

President Certificate to Mr. Meng, and gave him a special present, a work <strong>of</strong> Chinese<br />

calligraphy written by a <strong>PKU</strong> student, which reads ―esteemed by the public and made<br />

glory achievements‖. After the ceremony, Mr. Meng gave a passionate and<br />

humorous speech and shared with students his experience <strong>of</strong> success as an<br />

electronic apparatus magnate. He later answered questions raised by the audience.<br />

Asked about the relationship between his language skills and his achievements in<br />

enterprise circles, Mr. Meng, being good at <strong>English</strong>, French, Spanish, German and<br />

Russian, taught the audience how to say ―thanks‖, ―hello‖, ―I love you‖ in different<br />

languages, but emphasized that the mother tongue is the most important.<br />

Mr. Meng was born in Hong Kong in 1927, and studied aeronautical engineering in<br />

Beijing Tsinghua <strong>University</strong> in the 1940s. In 1953, he set up Xin Xing Enterprise in<br />

Hong Kong and started his business on a shoestring. Now Xin Xing has become a<br />

large consortium with about 2000 employees. Full <strong>of</strong> public spirit, Mr. Meng set up<br />

Xin Xing Education and Charity Fund in 1984, in order to promote the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> Education, Medical Care, Environment and so on in both Hong Kong and<br />

mainland. In 1993, Mr. Meng donated one million US dollars in order to promote the<br />

communications between <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> and oversea academic organizations<br />

and institutions. A minor planet was named after him by Chinese Academy <strong>of</strong><br />

Sciences in 1996. Recently, the government <strong>of</strong> the Hong Kong Special<br />

Administrative Region conferred him Redbud Insignia for his contributions to the<br />

development in Hong Kong and the mainland.<br />
