PKU Holds 2008 Seminar for
Graduates‘ Affairs

Peking University, Beijing, May. 13th, 2008: The seminar for graduates‘ affairs in
2008 was held at PKU on May 9-10, 2008. Lin Jianhua, executive vice president, Zhu
Xing, the president‘s assistant, Wang Yanglin, executive vice president of the
graduate school, Zhu Yuhai and Gao Dai, vice presidents of the graduate school,
Duan Liping, executive vice president of the Medicine Institute of the Graduate
School, the faculty and other managers for graduates‘ teaching and the leaders of
the relevant functional departments and the Shenzhen Graduate School participated
in the seminar. Professor Zhang Weiying, president‘s assistant and dean of
Guanghua School of Management, Professor Rao Yi, Dean of College of Life
Sciences, Academician Gao Song, dean of CCME, were invited to deliver an
exchange report in the seminar. Branch chairmen and the instructor representatives,
including Academician Wen Lan from the Institute of Mathematics and Professor Pei
Xiaorui from School of Foreign Languages, attended the seminar as well.
The participants focused on the way to increase the attractiveness for outstanding
graduate students and to deal with the relationship between the scale of training and
quality in graduates‘ education in the current situation.
Lin Jianhua, executive vice president of Peking University, pointed out in his speech
that the Graduate School and all colleges has done a lot in the recruitment and
culture of graduate students in recent years and formed basically a sound
mechanism. He stressed that PKU was at an important period of development, so
that the level of post-graduates‘ education and scientific research were essential for
the construction of world-class university. As a result, concepts and methods for
recruitment and selection should be changed to improve graduate education level;
overall size and education quality should be controlled and improved with proper
relation; the faculty should be developed to exert an initiative and leading role and
discipline advantage.
Zhu Yuhai, vice president of Graduate School of PKU made an analysis for the
graduates‘ recruitment from the scale of enrollment, selection of graduate students,
rational allocation of admission scheme. He pointed out that with the significant
