PKU Exchange Students Hold Benefit
Performance in Taiwan for Yushu
Victims

Peking University, Beijing, May 18, 2010: A benefit performance was held by
mainland exchange students in Taiwan universities to bless the victims of the Yushu
earthquake. At 7:30 pm on May 13, the benefit performance named ―Let‘s Join
Hands to Rebuild Our Homeland‖ started in the Heqing Hall of the Tsing Hua
University (NTHU). The purpose of this event is to act as an outlet for their concerns
for Yushu of both mainland and Taiwan students. It began by a sad documentary
about the earthquake and the rebuilding of the stricken region, indicating the hopeful
future after all efforts. A timeslot for praying was added to the event, in which a
one-minute silence was held. The whole audience, with electronic candles in their
hands, gave the victims their most sincere blessings.
This benefit performance was started, organized, and carried out chiefly by mainland
exchange students attending the NTHU and National Chiao Tung University, where
a total of 20 exchange students were from PKU in these two universities, and most of
them have participated in the preparatory work of the performance. In addition, more
than 70 exchange students from mainland universities, including Tsinghua
University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, Xi‘an Jiaotong University, and
Lanzhou University, also took part in the preparations.
The initiator of the benefit performance, a ‗07 undergraduate student Wang Qing,
from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Peking University, who
is now an exchange student in NTHU, said that the reasons for starting this activity is
due to the fact that very little attention was paid to the earthquake in Yushu in
Taiwan, and hoped that something could be done to change this situation.
Zhuang Xiwei, who is also an exchange student in NTHU, from School of Electronics
Engineering and Computer Science of PKU, was the sole organizer for the
performances. He said that he wished that his performance could catch the attention
of Taiwanese residents and raise their concern for the Yushu victims. He added that
this evening party was also a way to mourn for victims of natural disasters in Taiwan
