Peking University, Beijing, Nov 30th, 2004: At the thirdly teaching proseminar of the
Foreign Language Department of PKU on the afternoon of Nov 26th, the whole
faculty of the department had an intense discussion on the research and
development of the new teaching patterns and methods.
The main questions focused on how to cultivate the competitive personnel with
language skills, how to assure of their language studies as for those with a double
major and how to make good use of multimedia as well as international cooperating
resources in their teaching, etc.
During the discussion, the representatives from the eight small departments
respectively gave their subject reports on primary stage reforms of Russian teaching,
basic teaching material compilation of Japan teaching, second thought on doing a
double major, teaching supervision system of eastern languages, standardization of
English post graduates‘ training, cooperative post graduates cultivation, French
department working together with foreign universities in training doctor-degree
students, teaching reformation of English language supported by the network
techniques. Professors also discussed on most of those aspects. The meeting was
presided by vice dean of the department Liu Shuxiong and Wang Dongliang.
Dean of the Foreign Language Department Cheng Zhaoxiang made the final speech
at the end of the proseminar. He laid great emphasis on the outstanding traditions of
foreign language teaching at Peking University. He said, ―Certain kinds of teaching
traditions with long histories can hardly be demonstrated by some evaluation and
statistics, but they are the very thing that enhances the meanings and values of this
department.‖ In his opinion, by summing up in the meeting, they could confirm and
stable their position in the tradition, and keep the balance of language teaching
between inland traditions and international institutions.
