300-odd PKU Students Volunteered to
participate in Terry Fox Marathon

PKU News, Beijing, Sep 30th, 2004: The 2004 Terry Fox Volunteer Marathon began
at Chaoyang Park on the morning of Sept. 25th. Three hundred odd students from
Peking University participated in the activity under the organization of the Loveheart
Association of PKU.
The campaign formally began at 9:00 a.m. Led by two flag-bearers, all the
participants finished their 7.2-mile journey, by running or even walking at last. For
many of the participating students, it was their first time to take part in a
long-distance running, but they held on to the finish line.
Being called the Marathon for Hope as well, Terry Fox Volunteer Running is a
non-competitive sports activity which aims at soliciting donations for cancer
research. Initiated by a Canadian Terry Fox, it has spread over more than fifty
countries in the world and Beijing has successfully held the activity six times until
today. Early in 1999 when Terry Fox spirit came to Beijing, impelled by the Canadian
embassy in Beijing and the Beijing Tumor Hospital of Chinese Medical Academy, the
Loveheart Association, together with PKU Mountaineering Association (PUMA) and
PKU Students‘ Union, organized more than one hundred PKU students to participate
in this activity. Later, the Loveheart Association of PKU organizes PKU students to
take part in this activity for commonweal every year. Year after year, more and more
people get involved and its influences spread wider and wider with various
participants such as PKU students, teachers, school workers, foreign students and
even the so-called ―the marginalized at Peking University‖.
It is reported that the solicited donation in the first Marathon has been used in the
general cervical cancer survey in the poor areas in Shaanxi Province and the
Taihang anticancer program. And the solicited donation in 2000 has been used in the
clinic treatment research..
