A Thirteen-year-old Wonder Child

Bao Yuyang, a student in Class Eighteen, Grade Three, in 1th High School attached
to Central China Normal University, Wuhan, Hubei province, recently received the
recommendation for admission to Peking University. Only thirteen years old, Bao
Yuyang becomes the youngest student among those who have received the
recommendation in recent years. He spent only four years on elementary school
courses, which costs an average child six years to complete. And he just stayed in
junior high school for one year when he skipped to the high school department,
where he received three years systematic education. During high school, he won
Hubei‘s first-class awards both in national high school mathematics and chemistry
league matches in 2003 and other awards in 2002, any of which was difficult for
ordinary people.
On November 30, 2003, in a recruiting consultative meeting, a vice president of
Peking University became deeply interested in Bao Yuyang, and communicated with
him specially after meeting. Quickly the president was impressed by Bao Yuyang
and then took his material to Beijing for further research. In December, 2003, Peking
University agreed on the admission of Bao Yuyang.
Although Bao Yuyang skipped the second and third years of junior high school, he
could quickly come up with the classmates in a few days and even go ahead in
algebra and chemistry. When he was studying, he devoted all himself to it and
nothing could affect him. he studied mainly by himself with the guidance of teachers.
He is very fond of reading and has preeminent memory. He can work out twenty-five
mathematics contest problems and the length of each equals an essay.
His chemistry had already reached the university level before the third year of high
school, however, because of his short stature, he had to stand on a chair to do
experiments, he had to change to do research in mathematics. ―And his mathematics
level has greatly exceeded high school level and he has already taught himself part
of university calculus,‖ said Ye Xinnian, the teacher in charge of Bao‘s class, ―Not
