Office Now Facing Outside Market

Beijing, Peking University, Nov 2nd, 2004 Oct 19th:Cooperated with China
performing arts agency, PKU Centennial Auditorium will put part of its seats of
performance on some ticket offices as a reform of its traditional way of selling tickets
only at PKU from November.
The seats that will be sold outside PKU are some of the expensive ones of
performances and the number of the tickets will be strictly limited. Liu Shou‘an, head
of the management office said: ―The price will not rise with the reform carried out.‖
It is reported that the purpose of the reform is to attract more famous performing
groups inside and outside China to come and give an excellent performance for
PKU, as well as keeping it running normally and its normal cost of each performance.
Take the opera Yuan Ye that had been played several days earlier for example, the
lowest price for each seat in other opera houses is 180 Yuan while at PKU
Centennial Auditorium it was only 10 Yuan, with the purpose that more students
could enjoy fine arts.
In spite of that, the concert A Fair Tale and La Mer by Debussy performed by China
National Symphony Orchestra on the night of October 30th had only got ten percent
of its seats sold. The ticket office was far less than that had been paid. Moreover, in
order to satisfy the students‘ need, PKU Centennial Auditorium had shown more
foreign films. That together with its new way of accounting both increased the hall‘s
daily cost. Attendance had to be increased to enable PKU Hall to afford to invite
more excellent performing groups, to solve which problem sparing some of the
tickets to audience outside PKU had become an effective way.
