In the closing ceremony, the president expressed his sincere appreciation to the
volunteers. It meant the volunteers‘ work had a successful close. It also symbolized
that the Dept. of Psychology had a preliminary success in an attempt to promote the
transformation of Olympic legacy and beneficially combine volunteer work with
academic study. The volunteers from Dept. of Psychology reinterpreted the spirit of
volunteerism by their actions.
Facing Catastrophe: Darkness Dispelled by Love
The spirit of volunteerism is not only showed in the Olympics and the WCP, but also
in the catastrophe. They lighted the candle of life and hope by power of science and
glory of humanity which bring strength, courage, and hope to the compatriots in the
disaster areas.
In May 12, 2008, a strong earthquake hit Wenchuan which every Chinese will never
forget. Soon after the disaster, when they knew that countless people in the disaster
area stood severe psychological and they urgently needed psychological care,
graduate students of Dept. of Psychology organized a professional volunteer team to
disaster areas and worked for earthquake relief and provided psychological
assistance. Their action gained the support from Prof. Lin Jianhua, Executive Vice
President of PKU, leaders of Dept. of Psychology and direct guidance from Prof.
Qian Mingyi, expert in Clinical Psychology.
During that unforgettable day, they toured extensively over Guangyuan, Qingchuan,
and Pengzhou. They gave psychological training to local doctors helping them to
give better treatment to patients. They also actively involved themselves in alleviate
the psychological trauma of all kinds of rescue staff. Additionally, they concentrated
possible resources to the project of ―children psychological rehabilitation‖ which was
supported by Sichuan Province.
In the interview, Dr. Xu Kaiwen, who was the sponsor of this psychological rescue
plan, told us that there were a lot of things the professional volunteers could do to
disaster areas. In Chengdu, they gave about 120 psychiatrists and local doctors
psychological training; in Chongqing, they gave basic psychological rescue training
to local volunteers; in Pengzhou, they chose the teachers and students from Xinxing
Town as the special patients of psychological treatment and provided psychological
training to local people in order to help them walk out of the darkness of disaster.
Even today, they have sent people to Sichuan to provide psychological treatments
every month. Dr. Xu said that they would continue the rescue work based on the plan
of ―Level Three Intervention‖ as long as the funds were possible and there were
needs in disaster areas.
Dr. Xu also told the reporter that he could always feel the value and meaning of his
北京大学英语新闻网/Peking University News work in the disaster areas. It is a feeling of the highest recognition to voluntary work which is more important than material rewards. In the disaster areas, we could always see the volunteers who were working from dawn to dusk, and there were also teenagers who were taking care of the unknown wounded in the hospitals. All their efforts were to give survival possibilities to the suffering compatriots. In the disaster areas, the volunteer was no long an effective word to tell people apart because everyone who could move was willing to help others. In the disaster areas, people could really understand the beauty of the spirit of volunteerism because it was the symbol of selflessness and glory of spirit of humanity. In the meantime, the other students of Dept. of Psychology were also doing something to support their work in the disaster areas. They made psychological knowledge manuals—―After The Earthquake, How Can We Face It?‖, and handed them out in the Triangle. With the love of Dept. of Psychology, these 4000 booklets were given to PKU teachers and students, especially the ones from Sichuan, to help them to face this hard time. Just like Dr. Xu said: ―we could feel light in the darkness because there is love.‖ ―Post-Olympics‖ Era: Carry Forward Spirit of Volunteerism by Reorganizing Work Plans Though the joys of the Olympics haven‘t disappeared completely, the teachers and students of Dept. of Psychology have begun to make plans carefully in order to achieve the transformation of Olympic legacy and deepening of spirit of volunteerism. When talking about the future development of voluntary work, Zhou Jian, Secretary of the Communist Young League Committee of Dept. of Psychology, said: ―In the Olympics and the Paralympics, voluntary service concentrated rich social resources and attracted wide social attention, which are already the past. Now, voluntary service has turned to a routine work with low social concern and return. So how to combine the social resources and students‘ passion has become the most important part of the Olympic legacy transformation in colleges.‖ ―The Dept. of Psychology students‘ participation of voluntary service in WCP and the earthquake relief has proved that it is an appropriate form to integrate students‘ knowledge and public welfare activities. The knowledge learnt in practice and the happiness gained in voluntary service have promoted each other and will become the power to drive more students to participate in the voluntary service.‖ ―In another point, the college students have received a lot of benefits from the whole nation and society. So to participate in voluntary service before they leave school will show the students‘ social responsibility. After so many years‘ study, most students have learnt enough knowledge in their majors and have the skills to use them 265
