Peking University, Beijing, April 21st, 2006: On the morning of April 20th, a
delegation of seven people headed by President of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers) paid a visit to Peking University. Vice Director of PKU Council
Chi Huisheng, Assistant President Li Yansong, and Prof. Mei Hong, Vice Dean of
School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science met the group at Lin Hu
Xuan and had discussions with them on the further construction the IEEE Students'
Section, the expansion of influence of IEEE in China and how to successfully hold
the Tenth Section Students' Meeting in Beijing this year.
IEEE is the largest technological association all over the world, with 360,000
members including 35 Professional Societies and 2 Councils. As a multinational
academic organization, its headquarters is in New York, USA, but the 300 local
Sections are distributed in 150 countries around the world. 1249 professional
Chapters has been set up by far under the sections. IEEE organized over 300
academic meetings every year with about 350,000 people present. It also publishes
67 transactions, 25 magazines, 24 journals and 50 kinds of books. These
publications have great influence in the area of Electrical Technology and it actually
leads the future direction of such electrical technological areas as electric power,
electron, computers, communications, control and remote sensing. IEEE set up its
Beijing Section early in 1985 and it owns altogether 2,500 members now. With
China's development in economy and international communication becoming more
frequent, the number of the members of Beijing Section increases rapidly.
To provide a platform for students, professors and experts to have exchange on
professional areas, IEEE also sets up 900 Students' Section globally. Through
specific programs, activities, meetings, exchange programs and inter-areas
communications, these organizations provide a lot of IEEE practical technologies
and showed their professional advantages. They play a positive role in broadening
the young's scientific views and heightening their engineering attainment. The IEEE
Students' Section of Peking University, set up by PKU School of Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science, is now attracting more and more student
members, primarily graduate and doctoral students. It takes launching academic
awards as its main activity form and wins praises from students. With the IEEE
paying increasing attention to Peking University, Beijing and China, the IEEE
Students' Section of Peking University will definitely attracts more attention from the
