PKU News, Beijing, Dec 2nd, 2004: Next year will see more than three million
university students graduate for the first time, and nine tenths of them are becoming
or are job hunters now. For most Peking University graduates, it is popular to seek
position in an international company, and the crowded audience in the lecture
presented by Shelly Chen, CEO of China Education Network International, on
opening the door to an international company was a perfect proof.
Based on her previous experience in the USA, she firstly pointed out some facts, that
globalization was pushing us to have to compete with others all the time and many
Chinese could not be valued for their talent because we didn‘t have enough
experience exposed to international companies, to proceed with her speech. She
then emphasized the basics people had to understand before finding a job: the
purpose of business was to make profit and you had to make sure that you could
contribute to the corporate profit making process; the corporate key words helped
operate huge corporations, including mission or vision, corporate bottom line,
productivity, efficiency, effectiveness, growth and so on; and the most important for a
corporation was the human capital. To be a successful individual, one should first be
goal oriented to have passion or desire to succeed, and personal traits, such as
highly motivated, dependable, responsible, leadership, problem-solving,
communication skills and so on, were also very important.
―Remember, in opening the door to an international company, you hold the key.‖ ―It‘s
simply a matter of sales campaign: the product is you.‖ ―But to look for a job is a
hardest job itself.‖ She and later her husband then introduced the skills and
knowledge in job-hunting by treating it as a process: ―knowing where you are going‖
or having career goals; ―defining the product (you)‖ from functional skills, industry
knowledge, market expertise, personal strengths and accomplishments; ―developing
marketing materials‖ including resume, cover letters, references and follow up
