Environment Forum at PKU

Peking University, Beijing, June 5th, 2006: 2006 1st International College Students‘
Environment Forum was opened at Overseas Exchange Center on the morning of
June 3rd, sponsored by School of Environment, Peking University, and attracted
more than twenty universities and institutes in China and many universities
overseas, such as MIT, University of California Berkeley, Waseda University and
Cambridge University, etc..
Since the desertification and sandstorm have severely endangered the development
of economy and society, the first environment forum was entitled ―Fight against
Desertification – from Ideal to Action.‖ A series of activities will be carried out:
speeches on desertification by famous scholars, exhibition of research achievements
by college students and one-week investigation in A-Lashan.
Zhang Yan, Vice Chair of CCP of PKU, said the forum expressed PKUers‘ concern
with development and progress of society. Mr. Maurice Strong, special advisor on
environment of UN Secretariat-General said in his speech that China‘s environment
had a lot to do with the world and thus solving the environmental problems in China
was a great assistance to the world. Professor Jiang Jiasi, Dean of School of
Environment, encouraged the young PKUers to shoulder the historical mission and
contribute to the development of environment project. There were also thematic
speeches on desertification: ―Where is Shangri-La?‖ by Professor Guan Junwei and
―Fight against Desertification‖ by Professor Ci Longjun. Additionally, there was a
video speech by Mr. Kofi Annan, filmed during his visit a few days ago.
