I. Media Communication and Romanian Identity Values<br />

the analysts in the public space has become more and more aware of<br />

media communication, because through media many of the interactions<br />

that develop in the flow of life require combinations of the various action<br />

forms.<br />

Mass media have created a new kind of public, a mediated public, an<br />

open space, a visible one, that expressed the mediated symbolic forms.<br />

In this space of symbolic values, cultural identity elements must be<br />

contextualized and related to a history of mentalities, to the conscience of<br />

the community that bears the mark of cultural identity.<br />

public space and public communication generate multiple perspectives,<br />

but the same purpose: re-interpretation of the social and its symbolic<br />

forms. It is an environment of mutual awareness (Chicago School), where<br />

the internal states of the actants are decoded. It is an environment of<br />

practical intersubjectivity, the link between people and their networking<br />

social cooperation (communication and socialization). It is organized and<br />

politically oriented. According to J. habermas’s theory (The public sphere<br />

and its social transformation, the universe, Bucharest, 1998), public space<br />

is the mediation place between civil society and the state, a place where<br />

public opinion is born and expressed. Interactions that occur in this public<br />

space become visible through the mass media. the role of the radio, for<br />

example, is to inform the public about events on the social agenda and
