Roman veterans and the city institutions of Philippopolis... 567
gentilicum from his father Λ(ούκιος) Αὐρ(ήλιος) Ῥοῦφος who had received
his citizenship and roman names after completing military service. Another
argument for that is the cognomen Ῥοῦφος which corresponds with the
latin cognomen rufus. the cognomen was very popular among the roman
aristocracy, 150 but also it was widely spread among the thracians, and
belongs to the group of roman cognomina inspired by physical and other
features. In thrace, we find in the names of people with roman names, 151
and where we have Greek names that people are descendents of romans or
romanized people. 152 that cognomen gained wide acceptance among the
soldiers and veterans. I am, therefore, inclined to accept that the father of
Λ(ούκιος) Αὐρ(ήλιος) Ῥοῦφος received his roman citizenship and names
after successful completion of a military service.
Priests
Some priests are also known from the inscriptions from philippopolis.
until now only five ἀρχιερεια are known: Τι(βέριος) Κλαύδιος Πολέμαρχος,
(Table 6). We have already discussed Τ(ίτος) Φλ(άβιος) Πρεισκιανὸς and
Τί(τος) Φλ(άβιος) Οὐάριος Λοῦππος while Πό(πλιος) Οὐίρδιος Βάσσος
belonged to the equestrian family of the Virdii known from philippopolis.
these people were not only romanized, but they represent the solid base
of roman rule in thrace and later, when philippopolis gained the status
of neokorate, the neokoroi and archiereus were united into a single office.
