βενεφικιαρίος from the road station Parembole. 144 the thracian variant
of that name is easily definable after the omission of a lambda which
occurred in each inscription in thrace. Where the full name is preserved,
however, the person had imperial romanization. 145 Contrary to the Greek
inscriptions, the name Apollinarius did not achieve popularity in the West
and rome, or even latin inscriptions in the east. 146
After this short comment we may assume that [Β]αιβίος Ἀπολ(λ)ιναρίος
was actually a romanized thracian. If the reconstruction of the inscription is
true, this is the only thracarches who set up an imperial statue and presented
himself with only duo nomina. Therefore, [Β]αιβίος Ἀπολ(λ)ιναρίος was
not romanized after the completion of military service, but he could be a
descendent of someone, considering the specifics of the spread of Vibius.
[Λ(ούκιος) Αὐρ(ήλιος)?] Ῥοῦφος is the last of the thracarchoi with
entirely roman names. he is known only by an inscription set up by his
son and the reconstruction of his praenomen and nomen gentilicium is after
the names of his son who organized the pythian games in philippopolis. 147
An argument for such assumption is the praenomen lucius used by the
son in the time when Marcus after Marcus Aurelius was quite popular.
the organized games happened in 214, 148 almost 20 years after the last
time, when Commodus used that name, 149 visited philippopolis and gave
citizenship, as the case with Λ(ούκιος) Φούλβιος Ἁστικος reveals. The
epigraphic monuments from thrace and those where thracians are attested
show that in the end of the second and first half of the third century, and
especially after 214 when the inscription with Λ(ούκιος) Αὐρ(ήλιος)
Ῥοῦφος Ῥούφου was set, the locals, including the aristocracy, accepted the
name of M. Aurelius. so, our Λ(ούκιος) Αὐρ(ήλιος) Ῥοῦφος Ῥούφου is not
named after this practice, but seems to be earlier. the time span between he
and Commodus could be easily explained by receiving his praenomen and
149 Commodus took the name of l. Aurelius Commodus from 177 to 180 and 190-
192, but in the last period is l. Aelius Aurelius Commodus Aug. – see WeAVer 1972,
26-27; Λ(ούκιος) Φούλβιος Ἁστικος didn’t get his name l. Aurelius since the emperor’s
visit was in 186/187 AD.
