Roman veterans and the city institutions of Philippopolis... 547
physical appearance and could not be a distinguishing mark and, therefore,
of help for our study. however, in philippopolis and its territory only one
other Πύρρος is known mentioned with the names Αὐρ(ήλιος) Πύρρος. 34
It is very tempting to suggest that they might have some relations or was
even the same person, but all this is now speculation. We cannot establish
the origin of our Πύρρος not only because of the sole inscription, but also
because of the date of second half of the third century when making this
distinction is very difficult.
As for [— — —]δώρου Βειθυος 35 and Αὐρ(ηλίος) Ἀπολλωνίδος
Ἀπαλοδώρου, 36 it is quite probable that the former had thracian origins
while the latter was thracian or Greek. 37
Bouleutai
unlike the rest of the cities in thrace, until now there are no honorary,
votive, etc. inscriptions set up by a bouleutes in philippopolis. the only
exception is the funerary inscription of the wife of one of them. Most of
the known bouleutes of philippopolis come from the votive inscriptions
set up in the sanctuary of Asclepius, hygia and telesphoros near Batkun
and, therefore, our knowledge on the bouleutai is not only little, but in
most cases even the date of the inscriptions is under discussion. 38 It should
be mentioned that two more bouleutai can be added to the list of those of
Batkun – one of them known by a fragmentary inscription found in hissar
and the other one – known by an inscription found in Cillae, a mansio on
via diagonalis and dated to the middle of the third century.
until now only the name of seven bouleutai of philippopolis are known
(table 3). With one exception they are known only by a single inscription,
despite the fact that some of them could be identified with people
mentioned in other inscriptions from philippopolis and its territory. the
scanty evidence that the inscriptions provide, mainly because of the nature
of the epigraphic monuments and the fragmentary state of the inscription,
35 on Βειθυος as a thracian name – cf. DetSCheV 1957, 47, 66-68; there are
several possible ways of restoring the first name.
37 In this case is meant the fact that some of the thracians even descendents of veterans
with roman citizenship preferred Greek names such as Αὐρ(ήλιος) Ἀσκληπιόδοτος
Αἰλ(ίου) Ἰουλιανοῦ, who will be discussed below.
