554 IVO TOPALILOV
the fact that the cognomen Ἰουλιανος gained wide acceptance, not only in
the Western and eastern provinces, but also in thrace. thus, people with
this name were protoarchontos, 79 priests, 80 στρατευσάμενος ἐν πρετωρίῳ, 81
praetorians, 82 etc. Typical is the combination of Ἰουλιανος and Ἰουλιος,
but also Ἰουλιανος and the emperor’s name, quite often Aelii and Ulpii, but
others are possible too. 83
Some Iulianii are known from the territory of philippopolis. For
instance, among [πάτρωνα]ς̣ καὶ εὐεργέτας presented in a inscription from
Philippopolis one can find Οὔλπ(ιος) Ἰουλιανός; 84 the praetorian of ІІІ
praetorian cohorts Ἰουλιος Ἰουλιανος, 85 etc. 86 What makes an impression
is the involvement of only the roman names when the duo nomina system
is used, and the imperial romanization shows that the person under
consideration served in the military. As for Αἰλ(ίος) Ἰουλιανος, father
of Αὐρ(ήλιος) Ἀσκληπιόδοτος, βουλευτὴς καὶ γερουσιαστὴς, it would
not be surprising if this is Π(όπλιος) Αἴ(λιος) Ἰουλιανὸς, mentioned in
an inscription from Serdica, 87 bearing in mind that some of the elite in
philippopolis originated from Serdica.
Gerusiasts
All the inscriptions connected with the Sacred Gerusia in philippopolis
were gathered and commented upon by n. Sharankov. 88 For the moment we
know only of six gerusiats: Αὐρ(ήλιος) Σώστρατος Δοληους, Τιβ(έριος)
Αἰλ(ίου) Ἰουλιανοῦ (Table 4). of the analysis to follow we will have
to exclude Αὐρ(ήλιος) Ἀσκληπιόδοτος Αἰλ(ίου) Ἰουλιανοῦ, who was
already discussed, and Ἐπιγένης Μουκιανοῦ and Αὐρ(ήλιος) Σώστρατος
Δοληους. The former has Greek and latin names, but his father was a
