A newly published stela of M. Annius Severus, veteran of the Misenum
fleet might also be taken under consideration. the interesting point is that
the stela was set up by C. Scentius Celer. 159 the stela is very well done, the
relief is excellently cut and this is one of the four known stelae of this type
found in philippopolis (Fig. 2). Bearing in mind that it seems quite strange
that we find only the name of the person who set up the stela – C(aius)
Scenti(us) Celer; there is no information of his relation with the deceased,
etc., despite the fact that it was not a matter of a lack of space. A recent
study on the name of C. Scentius Celer shows, however, that he was also a
veteran of the Misenum fleet. 160

In his right hand M. Annius Severus holds an object which is to be
recognized as a magistrate sign (Fig. 3). 161 the absence of such information
shows that the military career is more important for M. Annius Severus or
C. Scentius Celer than the civic one. Despite the lack of any information
