Roman veterans and the city institutions of Philippopolis... 563
All the inscriptions from thrace, except the one from philippopolis,
derive from serdica. in one of them Αὐρ(ήλιος) Ἀστικὸς Φειλίου is
mentioned, 122 while the rest mention Φούλβιος Ἁστικος. Even more, the
similarity between Φούλβιος Ἁστικος presented as ἀγωνοθετούντων in one
of the inscriptions from Serdica 123 and our thracarches has already been
noted; however, I would like to draw attention to the other inscription from
serdica where precisely Λ(ούκιος) Φούλβιος Ἁστικος is mentioned. 124
it is highly improbable that Λ(ούκιος) Φούλβιος Ἁστικος obtained his
name and citizenship after serving in the roman army. the names he held
were not among the names in the nomenclature of the thracians in the
roman army. it seems that roman citizenship and names of Λ(ούκιος)
Φούλβιος Ἁστικος are due to his service rendered to the romans. one
of them could be the setting up of a statue of Commodus and organizing
games to honor him while travelling in thrace. I think it is not by chance
that Λ(ούκιος) Φούλβιος Ἁστικος got this gentilicium since a concentration
of consuls with Fuluius is to be observed in the period 179-180 when l.
Fuluius C. Bruttius praesens II was a consul (180), q. Fuluius Flaccus
(179) and suff. (180). 125 this is the time when Commodus held the name
lucius. 126
the group of thracarches with Greek and roman names is also well
attested. This group consists of Τ(ίτος) Φλ(άβιος) Πρεισκιανὸς, Μ(άρκος)
Αὐρ(ηλίος) Στάνοσονος Εἰάσονος and Μ(άρκος) Αὐρηλιος Εὐστόχιος
Κέλερ Ἀσκληπιἀδου. Τ(ίτος) Φλ(άβιος) Πρεισκιανὸς has been already
discussed above in the section on the protoarchotoi. The next are Μ(άρκος)
Αὐρ(ηλίος) Στάνοσονος Εἰάσονοῦ and Μ(άρκος) Αὐρηλιος Εὐστόχιος
Κέλερ Ἀσκληπιἀδου.
As we may observe the common thing between these two names are
the names of Marcus Aurelius followed by Greek gentilicium and Greek or
roman cognomen. undoubtedly the case here is connected with automatic
addition of M. Aur. to already existing gentilicium as a consequence of
the effect of Constitutio Antoniniana, announced in 212 г., but which
gained effect in 214. this is the explanation how two gentilicia appeared,
one of which is M. Aurelius in the roman nomenclature, such as in the
case with M. Aur. Cocceius Florianus, a primus pilus of the legio X
123 note IGBulg. IV, 1910; GerASIMoVA 2006, 160-161 suggests his carrier
firstly as agonothet in Serdica and then thracarches of Serdica origin
124 Note iGBulg. iV, 1928 - Λ(ούκιος) Φούλβιος Ἁστικος Ἀπόλλωνι Ρανισκεληνῳ
