Roman veterans and the city institutions of Philippopolis... 549
the names of the rest bouleutai which are as follow [— — — —
Γέ-]μελλος Γεμέλλου, [Αἴλιος (?)] Κέλσο[ς — —] and Αὐρ(ήλιος)
Ἀσκληπιόδοτος Αἰλ(ίου) Ἰουλιανοῦ will be considered here.
let us begin with what seems to be the earliest inscription, found in
hissar, ancient Diocletianopolis. this inscription partially preserved a list
of donors to the sanctuary of the Κυρίαις Νύμϕαις. Among them we find
Κέλσο[ς — —], followed by the abbreviation βουλ(ευτὴς). 44 It is very
tempting here to suggest that this Κέλσο[ς — —] is the one mentioned as
Αἴλιος Κέλσος in a votive plaque, set up for Κυρίαις Νύμϕαις in that place. 45
As we may observe, the cognomen of this bouleutes, probably
of philippopolis, since the Ara Augusta was a part of the territory of
philippopolis, is the Greek way of the latin name Celsus. this cognomen,
as is well known, belonged to that group of roman cognomina which
express physical features such as tall or high. 46 We should, therefore,
not be surprised to find this name not only among the names of the
members of the roman aristocracy as proposed 47 , but also among the
ordinary romans. In the Greek and latin provinces – Celsus is to be
found in the names of aedilis 48 , sacerdos 49 , flamen municipii 50 , military 51 ,
40 on this thracian name – see DetSCheV 1957, 47, 63; In one inscription
from Augusta trajana is mentioned a certain Αὐρ(ηλία) Μαρκέλλα Βειθυνίκου
ἀρχιερ[έυς] δι ὅπλων – see BuJuKlIeV 1971, 31-32 who could be the daughter of
our Βειθυνικὸ[ς.
46 See BeŠeVlIeV 1965, 29; see also pArISSAKI 2007; It is proposed the
assumption that Κέλσος is a Thracian name – see GEroV 1969, 350, № 2, as well as
the thracian Κέρσος was Celsus which is unlikely – see BeŠeVlIeV 1965, 35-36 and
bibliography cited there.
