veterans 52 , and others. 53 In some cases it is a part of names of roman
citizens, but in some others it is combined with a patronymic or Greek name
within a Greek onomastic formula. 54 It is worth mentioning, however, that
in most cases it is about roman citizens or their descendents and it is a part
of romanization. In this sense, it is not by chance that we find Celsus also
as a part of names with imperial romanization in the West as well in the
east, 55 most precisely of military.
in Thrace Κέλσος/celsus is not a rare name and it is found in people
with roman, as well as Greek and thracian names. It is generally found
in the territory of philippopolis and Augusta traiana, but we are aware of
some more Celsus from other places in thrace, such as pautalia, 56 Despite
the numerous examples, it is hardly credible that this name was one of the
most popular among the thracians and as such is described as the name
‘de assonance thrace’. 57 Among the people with the cognomen Κέλσος,
there are individuals with the emperor’s romanization, two of which have
Aelius and may be the only people who have Aurelius as gentilicium.
so, if Κέλσο[ς — —] βουλ(ευτὴς) is the same person as Αἴλιος Κέλσος
of the same place, which I am inclined to accept, the roman names and
citizenship of that bouleutes is definitely after completion of military
service – his or someone of his predecessors. the way of engraving the
letters of the inscription dates it roughly the second century and Αἴλιος
Κέλσος might be, in fact, one of those veterans who returned home, not
settling in philippopolis.
As second, chronologically, bouleutes with a roman name seems to be
