552 IVO TOPALILOV
Second is the observation that this cognomen was spread mostly
amongst people with imperial romanization, and especially after the
middle of the second century AD. 66 Chronologically, the last imperial name
accepted was that of Marcus Aurelius. 67 these examples make me believe
that Gemellus was actually one of the most preferred cognomen among the
roman soldiers of peregrine origin settled in the romanized provinces.
In some of the inscriptions Gemellus was used not as a cognomen, but
as nomen gentilicium. 68 In case with peregrines, it became quite popular
for a father’s cognomen to turn into the nomen gentilicium in his son’s
name, 69 and it is to be found among the veterans too. 70 this practice is
rare in thrace and it is typical for the superficial romanized veterans. 71
this is different from the practice when the son accepts his father’s new
roman names after the latter has been romanized. of interest is the case
of M(arcus) Gemellus from numidia. 72
Certainly, Gemellus is also to be found in the Greek inscriptions and
according to them it seems to become most popular in Asia Minor, northern
Greece, egypt, nubia and Cyrenaica. In northern Greece the Gemelli
