556 IVO TOPALILOV
is Μουκιανος and could be the Thracian – Μο(υ)κιανος, 90 but also the
latin name Mucianus. If it is a thracian name, as I am inclined to accept,
Τιβ(έριος) Κλαύδιος Πασίνους is to be regarded as a representative of the
thracian aristocracy who received their roman names during the time of
Claudius.
Ἑρέννιος Ἡρακλιανὸς is known only by the funeral inscription cited on
his sarcophagus. 91 At first glance, the roman nomen gentilicium Ἑρέννιος,
the Greek version of Herennius and one of the most wide-spread gentilicia,
and its use in the duo nomina system with a Greek cognomen implies an
eastern provincial with roman name and citizenship. the inscriptions
from the Eastern provinces reveal that people with Ἑρέννιος could have had
roman as well Greek origin. 92 In thrace the use of this name is an exception
and we know of only one case where Ἑρέννιοι Βασσιανός is a descendent of
a veteran 93 . The omission of praenomen in the case of Ἑρέννιος Ἡρακλιανὸς
shows not only his level of romanization, but allows us to conclude that
this is an eastern provincial or, more probably, a freedmen or descendent
of such. 94 it is a fact that Ἑρέννιος Ἡρακλιανὸς has an imperial gentilicum
which could be regarded as an argument for this assumption. And the
institution of “Sacred Gerusia” allows freedmen to be members.
of special interest is also the case of (.)…ος Πομπέϊος Σατορνεῖνος,
whose name is also found on a seal from the territory of philippopolis
presented as q(uintus) pompei(us) Saturninus. 95 We assume that it is the
same person or very close relative, since both the inscription and the seals
have date in the second century.
In the course of publishing the seals, the authors make a short onomastic
analysis. It is clear that this gentilicium is very specific for people from
Asia Minor and the east. this could even be regarded as a badge for
