V, 5408 Πρεισκιανὸς ἀρχιερέως δι’ ὅπλων As for Αὐρ(ήλιος) Ἀπολλωνίδης Ἀπολλοδώρου, his Greek father’s name and the date of the inscription after 214 are arguments to suggest that he belonged to the elite of the province who received roman citizenship and roman names after the Constitutio Antoniniana. More interesting is the case of Τι(βέριος) Κλαύδιος Πολέμαρχος. he is the earliest known priest of the province of thrace whose gens received roman citizenship and roman names in the very beginning of roman rule in thrace where not even all the strategoi were romanized. the early date of the inscription, 103-114, as well as the specifics regarding the romanization of the elite when thrace became a roman province in 46 BC, allow me to suggest that Τι(βέριος) Κλαύδιος Πολέμαρχος was a member of one of the most distinguished thracian aristocratic families. 153 153 tAtSCheVA.
Others Roman veterans and the city institutions of Philippopolis... 569 this section includes all the offices that were held by former military whose military career was actually a necessary step in their cursus honorum on their way to high administrative positions in the empire. one of them is Λ(ούκιος) Κάσσιος Λ(ουκίου) υ(ἱὸς) Κυρ(είνα) Σεου̣ῆ̣ρ̣ος, a prefect of cohors IV thracum and the fleet at ravenna. he completed his carrier as ἐπίτροπος τοῦ Σεβαστοῦ Μακεδονίας καὶ Θρᾴκης ἔπαρχον. 154 unfortunately, the origin of l. Cassius Severus remains unclear, but it is highly probable that the economic prosperity of philippopolis was one of the reasons to settle here. the other example is about are the members of the Virdii, mentioned above. The epigraphic monuments reveal Αὐρηλίος Μουκιανος Εἰουλιανοῦ πρητωριανος who was most probably magister vici. 155 he was not only a praetorian, but also a descendent of veteran who received his roman citizenship and roman names after completion military service under the Aelii – hadrian or Antoninus pius. this veteran should be assigned to that group of Aelii veterans known from philippopolis and its territory, some of which were promoted and involved into the city’s governance. Conclusion After this analysis of the onomastics available from the ruling class in philippopolis some conclusions can be made. Attention was paid mainly to these inscriptions and examples dated before 214, since after that year the peregrines with roman names and veterans could be quite easily confused, especially in thrace. the results achieved in the course of the study shed light on the level of romanization of the individuals, but they do not reflect the real involvement of the veterans into the governing institutions. By studying the epigraphic material available we can only trace which offices were more attractive for the veterans, which offices they were allowed and to which offices they were promoted; the results here are only a statistic example. It is well known that one of the main aims of the veterans after honesta missio is to achieve high social status and involvement into the ruling class of the cities. Since we know of just a few such examples, it is accepted in the bibliography that this is due to financial qualifications of the cities 154 See BotuŠAroVA 1985, 1, 13-23; IGBulg.
