562 IVO TOPALILOV
clarissimus laticlavus under the reign of Antoninus pius and in whose end
C. Iulius Commodus orfitanus was provincial governor of thrace.
As for [Αἴ(?)]λ(ίος) Κοτυος, this is another case with veteran and
hadrianic romanization as, for instance, the already mentioned [Αἴλιος
(?)] Κέλσο[ς — —], Αἴλ(ίος) Ἰουλιανος, Αἰλ(ίου) Οὐάλεντος etc. The
preserving of that specific thracian name stresses the thracian origin of
the holder, since this is a royal thracian name and served as a badge of
origin among the thracians.
Λ(ούκιος) Φούλβιος Ἁστικος held the office of thracarches in 187 г.
when he set up a statue of Commodus on the agora of philippopolis. he
is presented in the roman onomastic formula with tria nomina, but the
praenomena and nomen gentilicium are roman while the cognomen –
thracian. We are not going to discuss the gentilicium Fuluius since this
is one the common gentilicia used by the romans – consuls, 114 but also
ordinary romans. What should be mentioned is that this gentilicium was
widely spread among the romans of peregrine origin in the provinces, 115
but not among the roman soldiers and veterans where only sporadic cases
are known. 116 And the inscriptions reveal that some of Fulvii were involved
into local government institutions.
The cognomen Ἁστικος is Thracian and has link with the tribe of astoi
and mountain Asticus, modern Strandza, Se Bulgaria. 117 It was for this
reason 118 that the name gained no popularity in the roman time and we
know of two people with that cognomen form Greece, 119 four from Asia
Minor, 120 and three from thrace. It is also found in several inscriptions
from rome and western provinces, but mainly rome. 121
114 See the list in lASSère 2005, 977
115 especially in hispania citerior, Africa proconsularis and other romanised
provinces. See the examples - Ae 1979, 570. (B); Ae 2005, 1662; Ae 1999, 1787; Ae
1973, 581; Ae 1982, 524 etc.
116 I have found only two - See rIzAKIS 1998, 200, nr. 151; pl. 30, 151; CIl 03,
02031 etc.
117 DetSCheV 1957, 32
118 it is suggested that Ἁστικος’ is an adjective in Greek and mean ‘urban’ – see
GerASIMoVA 2006, 160, but this is quite unlikely. the roman citizens with peregrine
origin used Ingenuus in these cases
119 roesch, Ithesp 192 – Boiotia; thessaly- Ae 1917, 10, 305
120 three of the inscriptions were found in Caria – Alabanda 25; halikarnassos, 116;
Mylasa 274, and there are milestones dated under tetrarchs under hegemo(n) Φούλβιος
Ἁστικος; the fourth one was found in Phrygia with the same date and name
