Five bal!ni of women are: r(pabala', bhoga˚, ñ!ti˚, putta˚, s"la˚ S iv.246 -- 8. The five -- fold force (bala'
pañca -- vidha') of a king J v.120, 121 consists of b!h!bala' strength of

arms, bhoga˚ of wealth, amacca˚ of counsellors, abhijacca˚ of high birth, paññ!˚ the force of wisdom; in the
religious sense five bal!ni or powers are commonly enumd: saddh!bala', viriya˚, sati˚, sam!dhi˚, paññ!˚ A

etc. They correspond to the 5 indriy!ni and are developed with them. S v.219, 220; Nett 31; they are
cultivated to destroy the five uddhambh!giy!ni sa'yojan!ni S v.251. They are freq. referred to in
instructions of the Buddha about the constituents of the "Dhamma," culminating in the eightfold Path, viz.
catt!ro satipa&&h!n!, samappadh!n!, catt!ro iddhip!d!, pañcindriyani, p. bal!ni, sattabojjhang!ni, ariyo
a&&hangiko maggo e. g. S iii.96; Ps ii.56; Nd1 13=360 =Nd2 420; Nd2 s. v. satipa&&h!na; and passim. [Cp.

specially mentioned A i.52 (pa&isankh!nabala' and bh!van!˚), also D iii.213, followed here by the other
"pair" satibala' and sam!dhi˚. There are four bal!ni of the ariyas!vaka, by which he overcomes the five
fears (pañca bhay!ni q. v.); the four are paññ!bala', viriya˚, anavajja˚ sang!ha˚ A iv.363 sq., as given at A
ii.141, also the foll. 3 groups of catt!ri bal!ni: (1) saddh!bala', viriya˚, sati˚, sam!dhi˚, cp. D iii.229. --
(2) sati˚ sam!dhi, anavajja˚, sang!ha˚. (3) pa&isankh!na˚, bh!van!˚, anavajja˚, sang!ha˚. -- For 4 bal!ni see

Pa&iccasamupp!da at S ii.27, 28. The bal!ni of the s!vaka are distinct from those of the Tath!gatha:
Kvu 228 sq. -- There are seven bal!ni D iii.253, and seven kh"*!sava -- bal!ni 283 i. e. saddh!bala',
viriya˚, sati˚, sam!dhi˚, paññ!˚, hiri˚ and ottappa˚. The same group is repeated in the Abhidhamma; Dhs 58,
