Bharati [bh%, cp. Lat. fero, Gr. fe/rw, Av. baraiti, Oir. berim, Goth. bairan= to bear, Ger. geb!ren. Dhtm<br />

expls simply by "bharena"] to bear, support, feed, maintain J v.260 (mama bharatha, aha' bhatt! bhav!mi<br />

vo; C. explns as "ma' icchatha"). -- pp. bhata. See also bha&a, bhara, bharita, and Der. fr. bh!r˚. A curious<br />

Passive form is anu -- bh"ram!na (ppr.) M iii.123 (chatta: a parasol being spread out), on which see Geiger,<br />

Bharu<br />

Bharu [a dial. (inscription) word, cp. Kern, Toev. s. v.] sea, in two names for a town and a kingdom viz.<br />

Bharukaccha Nd1 155; J ii.188; iv.137, and Bharu -- ra&&ha J ii.169 sq., a kingdom which is said to have<br />

been swallowed up by the sea. -- Also in N. of the King of that country Bharu -- r!j! J ii.171 (v. l. Kuru˚). -<br />

- Der. Bh!rukacchaka an inhabitant of Bharukaccha DhsA 305 (so read at Expos. ii.401).<br />

Bhallaka<br />

Bhallaka [lit. from the Bhalla people] a kind of copper, enumd under the eight pis!ca -- loh!ni, or copper<br />

coming from the Pi$!ca country VbhA 63 (is reading correct?). It is doubtful whether we should not read<br />

mallaka, cp. malla.<br />

Bhall!&aka<br />

Bhall!&aka [cp. Epic Sk. bhall!taka] the marking nut plant Semicarpus anacardium J vi.578.<br />

Bhava<br />

Bhava [cp. Sk. bhava, as philosophical term late, but as N. of a deity Vedic; of bh(, see bhavati]<br />

"becoming," (form of) rebirth, (state of) existence, a "life." <strong>The</strong>re are 3 states of existence conventionally<br />

enumd as k!ma˚, r(pa˚, ar(pa˚ or sensual existence, deva -- corporeal, & formless existence (cp. r(pa) D<br />

ii.57; iii.216; S ii.3; iv.258; A ii.223; iii.444; Nd1 48; Nd2 s. v. dh!tu B.; Vism 210=DA i.34; Vism 529;<br />

VbhA 204. -- Another view is represented by the division of bhava into kamma˚ and upapatti˚ (uppatti˚), or<br />

the active functioning of a life in relation to the fruitional, or resultant way of the next life (cp. Cpd. 43)
