Y!vaka
Y!vaka [=yavaka] a dish prepared of barley J vi.373 (=yavata*.ula -- bhatta C.).
Y!vataka
Y!vataka (adj.) [fr. y!va, as t!vataka fr. t!va] as much as, as many as, as far as, whatever; usually in correl.
with t!vataka e.g. Vin i.83 (y!vataka . . . t.); D ii.18 (y. k!yo t. vy!mo); Nd2 2353 (y ˚' ñeyya' t ˚' ñ!*a');
or similarly M i.397 (y. kath! -- sall!po . . . sabba' ta' . . .); PvA 103 (y!vatak!=y!vanto). f. y!vatik!:
y!vatik! gati t!vatika' gantv! A i.112; y. n!gassa bh(mi as far as there was ground for the elephant D i.50;
similarly: y. y!nassa bh. as far as the carriage -- road D i.89, 106, 108; y. ñ!*assa bh. Nett 25.
Y!vat!
Y!vat! (indecl.) [abl. of y!vant in adv. use cp. t!vat!) as far as, like as, in comparison with, regarding,
because Dh 258 (na tena pa*.ito hoti y. bahu bh!sati=yattakena k!ra*ena DhA iii.383), 259, 266 (similarly,
C.= yattakena); Sn 759 (y!vat' atth" ti vuccati; expld at SnA 509 as "y!vat! ete cha !ramma*! 2 atth" 3 ti
vuccanti, vacana -- vyattayo veditabbo"); y!vat! ariya' parama' s"la', nâha' tattha attano sama -- sama'
samanupass!mi kuto bhiyyo "compared with this s"la I do not see anyone quite equal to myself, much less
greater." D i.74 y!vat! ariya' !yatana' yavat! vanippatho ida' agga -- nagara' bhavissati P!taliputta' pu&a
-- bhedana' Vin i.229=Ud 88=D ii.87 (concerning a most splendid site, and a condition for trade, this P!&.
will be the greatest town; trsln Dial. as far as Aryan people resort, as far as merchants travel . . .). y!vat!
satt' !v!s! y!vat! bhavagga' ete agg! ete sa&&h! [read se&&h!] lokasmi' yad idam arahanto "as far as the
abodes of beings, as far as heaven, these are the highest, these are the best, I mean the Arahants." S iii.84.
y!vat! dhamm! sankhat! v! asankhat! v! vir!go . . . aggam akkh!yati, yad -- ida' mada -- nimmadano . . .
A ii.34=It 88; "of all the things definite or indefinite: passionlessness deserves the highest praise, I mean
the disintoxication of pride etc." The expln at Vism 293 takes y!vat! (grammatically incorrectly) as n. pl.=
yattak!. -- y!vat! jagato gati as far as (like as) the course of the world It 120.
Y!vant
Y!vant (pron. rel.) [cp. Sk. y!vant; same formation as demonstr. pron. t!vant, of which the P. uses the adv.
nt. t!va (t) form more frequently than the adj. t!vant. The only case so far ascertained where t!vant occurs
as adj. is J v.72 (see below)] 1. y!vant as adj.: as many (as) Dh 337 (h!vant' ettha sam!gat! as many as are
assembled here); J v.72 (y!vanto uda -- bind(ni . . . t!vanto ga*.( j!yetha; C. on p. 74 expls by yattak!ni;
y!vat! pl. as many as Pv ii.116; y!vanto Pv ii.716 (=y!vatak! PvA 103); J v.370 (detha vatth!ni . . .
yavanto eva icchati as many as he wants). -- 2. y!vat (nt.) used adverbially. The examples and meanings
given here are really to be combined with those given under y!va2 (y!vad˚). It is hardly possible to
-- 556 --
distinguish clearly between the 2 categories; the t may well have been reduced to d or been replaced by
another sandhi consonant. However, the specific P!li use of y!va (like t!va) justifies a separate treatment of
y!va in that form only. -- y!vat occurs only in combn with ca (where we may assume either a peculiar nt.
form y!va': see y!va 2; or an assimilation of t to ñ before c. -- The form y!va mahanta' may originally
have been a y!va' m.) as y!vañ ca "and that," "i. e.," how much, however much, so great S i.149 (passa
y!vañ ca te ida' aparaddha': see how great a mistake you have made in this); It 91, 92 (passa y!vañ ca
!rak! & santike: see how far and near). y!vañ c' ida' stands for yad -- ida' (see ya˚ 4) in peculiar use of
restriction at M. III.169; S ii.178; A iii.34. -- 3. The nt. form y!vat further occurs in foll. cpds.: ˚!yuka'
(better as y!vat˚ than y!vat!˚) as long as life lasts, for a lifetime Mhvs 3, 41; VvA 196 (as adj. ˚!yuk! dibba
-- sampatti); PvA 66, 73, 133; ˚icchaka' as much as is desired, according to one's wishes Pug 12, 25; Vism
154 (here spelt y!vad -- icchaka'); ˚iha' see under y!va (cpds.) -- instr. yavat!: see sep.
