Mita<br />

Mita [Vedic mita, pp. of m!, min!ti, to measure; also in meaning "moderate, measured," cp. in same sense<br />

Gr. me/trios] measured, in measure D i.54 (do*a˚ a do*a measure full); Sn 300 (bh!gaso m. measured in<br />

harmonious proportions, i. e. stately); Pv i.1013 (id.); J iii.541. -- amita unlimited, without measure,<br />

boundless, in Ep. amit -- !bha of boundless lustre Sdhp 255. Also N. of a Buddha. -- !h!ra measured, i. e.<br />

limited food Sn 707. -- bh!*in speaking measuredly, i. e. in moderation Dh 227; J iv.252.<br />

Mitta<br />

Mitta (m. nt.) [cp. Vedic mitra, m. & nt., friend; Av. mipro, friend] friend. Usually m., although nt. occurs<br />

in meaning "friend," in sg. (Nett 164) & pl. (Sn 185, 187); in meaning "friendship" at J vi.375 (=mittabh!va<br />

C.). <strong>The</strong> half -- scientific, half -- popular etym. of mitta, as given at VbhA 108, is "mett!yant" ti mitt!,<br />

minant" ti v! m.; sabba -- guyhesu anto pakkhipant" ti attho" (the latter: "they enclose in all that is hidden").<br />

-- Two kinds of friends are distinguished at Nd2 510 (in exegesis of Sn 37 & 75), viz. !g!rika˚ (a house --<br />

or lay -- friend) and an!g!rika˚ (a homeless -- or clericalfriend). <strong>The</strong> former is possessed of all ordinary<br />

qualities of kindness and love, the latter of special virtues of mind & heart. -- A friend who acts as a sort of<br />

Mentor, or spiritual adviser, is called a kaly!*a -- mitta (see under kaly!*a). -- Mitta is often combd with<br />

similar terms, devoting relationship or friendship, e. g. with amacc! colleagues and ñ!ti -- s!lohita˚ blood --<br />

relations, in ster. phrase at Vin ii.126; A i.222; Sn p. 104; PvA 28; cp. ñ!ti -- mitt! relatives & friends Pv<br />

i.59; suhada ("dear heart") D iii.187 (four types, cp. m. pa&ir(paka); suhajja one who is dear to one's heart<br />

talker, one who flatters, one who is a spendthrift companion.) -- bandhava a relation in friendship, one who<br />

Mittat! (f.) -- (˚) [abstr. fr. mitta] state of being a friend, friendship, in kaly!*a˚ being a good friend,<br />
